Solid vs Engineered Wood Flooring: What's the Difference?

Both are real wood, but they’re built differently and suit different situations.

Solid wood is a single, solid piece of timber all the way through. It’s the traditional choice, can be sanded and refinished many times over its life, and lasts for decades. Because it reacts to changes in moisture and temperature, it’s best kept away from very damp rooms and isn’t usually recommended over underfloor heating.

Engineered wood has a real wood top layer bonded to a stable plywood core. That core makes it far more stable than solid wood, so it copes better with moisture, works over underfloor heating, and can be fitted in kitchens and other spaces where solid wood struggles. It still looks and feels like real wood because the surface is real wood.

We’ll help you weigh the two during your free measure, based on the room, the subfloor and your budget.

Can Wood Flooring Be Used in Kitchens and Bathrooms?

Kitchens: Yes, with the right board. Engineered wood is the sensible choice here, because its stable core handles the temperature swings and occasional spills of a kitchen far better than solid wood. Wipe up spills promptly and a well-finished engineered floor will serve a kitchen for years.

Bathrooms: This is where we’ll usually steer you away from wood. Bathrooms are too wet and humid for real wood to be a safe long-term bet, even engineered. For a bathroom that looks like wood, we’d recommend LVT or vinyl, both of which we supply and fit, and which are fully waterproof.

We’d always rather give you an honest steer than sell you a floor that won’t last in the room.

Is Wood Flooring Good for Pets?

Real wood can work well with pets, with a couple of sensible choices. A harder timber like oak resists claw marks better than softer woods, and a lacquered finish gives a tougher, more wipe-clean surface that shrugs off muddy paws and the odd accident, as long as spills are cleaned up quickly.

Bear in mind that no real wood floor is scratch-proof, and very active dogs may leave marks over time. The upside is that a solid or thick engineered floor can be sanded and refinished to bring it back, which carpet and laminate can’t offer. For heavy pet traffic, we’ll point you to a harder wood and a durable finish.

Because every room is different, we provide a free measure and a detailed written quote rather than a fixed price list, so the figure you get is accurate for your home.

Rectangular blocks laid in a distinctive zig-zag. One of the most sought-after patterns in Birmingham right now, adding timeless style to both classic and contemporary interiors.

Chevron Wood Flooring

Similar to herringbone but with block ends cut at an angle to form clean, continuous V-shapes. Chevron gives a sharper, more modern take on patterned wood flooring.

Brushed & Oiled Wood Flooring

Hover to view →

The surface is brushed to bring out the grain, then finished with oil for a natural, matt look. Oiled floors feel authentic underfoot and can be spot-repaired, though they need occasional re-oiling.

Lacquered Wood Flooring

Hover to view →

Finished with a protective lacquer that gives a subtle sheen and a tougher, more wipe-clean surface. Lower-maintenance and a practical choice for busier households.

Engineered Wood Flooring

A real wood top layer bonded to a stable plywood core. More resistant to movement than solid wood — suitable for underfloor heating and ground-floor installations where moisture may be a factor.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between solid and engineered wood flooring?
Solid wood is one solid piece of timber throughout. Engineered wood has a real wood top layer over a stable plywood core, making it more resistant to moisture and temperature change. Both are real wood; engineered is more versatile, solid can be refinished more often.
Can wood flooring be fitted in a kitchen?
Yes, engineered wood is well suited to kitchens because its stable core handles temperature changes and the odd spill better than solid wood. Wipe up spills promptly and it will last for years. Solid wood is riskier in kitchens due to moisture movement.
Can wood flooring be used in bathrooms?
We generally advise against real wood in bathrooms, even engineered, because the constant moisture and humidity shorten its life. For a wood look in a bathroom, LVT or vinyl is the safer choice, being fully waterproof. We supply and fit both.
How long does engineered wood flooring last?
Good-quality engineered wood typically lasts 20 to 30 years or more with proper care, depending on the thickness of the wear layer and how the room is used. A thicker top layer can also be sanded and refinished, extending its life further.
Can engineered wood flooring be sanded and refinished?
Yes, provided the real wood top layer is thick enough. Most quality engineered floors can be sanded and refinished one to three times over their life, refreshing the surface and removing wear. Thinner-veneer boards may only take a light refinish, so wear-layer thickness matters.
Is engineered wood suitable for underfloor heating?
Yes, most engineered wood ranges are compatible with underfloor heating because the plywood core stays stable as the floor warms and cools. Solid wood generally isn't recommended over underfloor heating. We'll confirm the right range for a heated subfloor during your measure.
Does wood flooring need underlay?
It depends on the fitting method. Floating engineered floors need an underlay for cushioning, sound and insulation, while glued-down or nailed floors often don't. We'll recommend the right approach and underlay for your subfloor and chosen floor.
Can wood flooring be fitted over concrete?
Yes. Engineered wood can be glued down or floated over a concrete subfloor, provided the concrete is dry, level and properly prepared, usually with a damp-proof membrane. Solid wood over concrete is more restricted. We check subfloor moisture and condition during the survey.
What is parquet flooring?
Parquet is wood flooring made from smaller blocks laid in a geometric pattern rather than long straight planks. Traditional and full of character, it includes patterns like herringbone and basketweave, and suits both period Birmingham homes and modern interiors.
What is herringbone wood flooring?
Herringbone is a classic parquet pattern where rectangular wood blocks are laid in an interlocking zig-zag. It's one of the most popular wood flooring looks, adding timeless style, and is a skilled install where accurate fitting is essential across the whole floor.
Herringbone vs chevron flooring: what's the difference?
In herringbone, rectangular blocks meet at right angles to form a broken zig-zag. In chevron, the block ends are cut at an angle so they meet in continuous, clean V-shapes. Herringbone reads more classic; chevron looks sharper and more modern.
Oiled vs lacquered wood flooring: which is better?
Oiled floors have a natural, matt look, feel authentic underfoot and can be spot-repaired, but need occasional re-oiling. Lacquered floors have a subtle sheen, are tougher and more wipe-clean, and need less upkeep. It comes down to look versus maintenance.
Is wood flooring good for pets?
It can be, with the right choices. A harder wood like oak and a tough lacquered finish resist claws and clean up easily. No wood floor is fully scratch-proof, but unlike carpet or laminate, a scratched wood floor can be sanded and refinished to look new again.
How much does wood flooring fitting cost?
Cost depends on solid or engineered, the timber, the pattern (herringbone and chevron cost more to fit than straight boards), room size, underlay and subfloor prep. We don't publish fixed rates. A free measure and written quote gives you an accurate figure.
How do I clean and maintain a real wood floor?
Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove grit, and clean with a barely damp mop and a cleaner made for wood, never a soaking-wet mop. Wipe spills quickly. Oiled floors need occasional re-oiling; lacquered floors mainly need protecting from scratches and grit.
